Assisted Stretching
What Is It?
PNF stretching, or proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, is a specialized stretching technique that is considered one of the most effective ways to relax tight muscles. Your provider will guide you through a series of movements to repeatedly contract, relax and progressively stretch your tight muscles. PNF stretching has been shown to help improve flexibility and performance.
Assisted stretching techniques can be used to relieve pain on their own, or in order to loosen up muscles in preparation for other treatments such as dry needling or chiropractic adjustment. Some of the stretches applied may be more intensive variations on the home stretches you are provided, so being diligent with the home exercise advice is important, as it will improve the outcomes of assisted stretching performed in clinic, and be much more comfortable for you, too!
